Communications Chair

The Communications Chair (Director) plays a crucial role in shaping and effectively delivering the organization's message to various stakeholders, including the media, supporters, and the general public. This role focuses on building relationships, managing communication channels, and ensuring consistent and impactful messaging that aligns with the organization's goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Networking and Media Relations: The Communications Chair proactively networks with groups and individuals who can help amplify the organization's message. This includes building relationships with journalists, reporters, and media outlets to increase the organization's visibility and secure media coverage. By establishing connections, the Communications Chair ensures the organization's mission and activities reach a wider audience.

  • Press Database Management: The Communications Chair builds and maintains a comprehensive database of relevant media outlets, journalists, and contacts. This database serves as a resource for sending press releases, media advisories, and other communications to targeted outlets. The Communications Chair keeps the database updated and seeks opportunities for expanding media coverage.

  • Management of Communication Channels: The Communications Chair oversees the organization's communication channels, including the website, social media platforms, and email newsletters. They ensure that these channels are regularly updated with compelling and relevant content to engage supporters, share organizational updates, and promote events and initiatives.

  • Blog Management: The Communications Chair is responsible for managing the organization's blog. They coordinate blog content creation, editing, and publication. The Communications Chair ensures that the blog reflects the organization's values, maintains a consistent voice, and aligns with the overall communication strategy.

  • Message Development and Copyrighting: The Communications Chair plays a pivotal role in crafting the organization's message. They work closely with the board, staff, and relevant committees to develop compelling and impactful messaging that resonates with the organization's target audience. The Communications Chair also reviews and approves copyrighting requests, ensuring that all written materials adhere to the organization's brand guidelines and effectively convey the desired message.

  • Collaboration with Fundraising and Donor Relations: The Communications Chair collaborates with the Fundraising and Donor Relations Chair to align communication efforts with fundraising initiatives. This may involve reviewing and approving donation letters, calls to action, and other fundraising-related materials to ensure consistency and effectiveness.

The Communications Chair role requires strong networking skills, excellent written and verbal communication abilities, and a strategic mindset. By fulfilling these responsibilities, the Communications Chair enhances the organization's visibility, shapes its public image, and effectively communicates its mission and impact to stakeholders and the broader community.
