Frequently Asked Questions
If you have a question that isn’t answered here, please contact us and we’ll get back to you as quickly as we can.
Q: Are you running your self-defence classes yet?
A: Not yet. Starting an organization like this requires a great deal of time and money. We are well on our way, however, and hope to begin running classes in Spring 2024. Follow us on Facebook & Instagram, subscribe to our blog, and join our mailing list, to be kept updated on our progress!
Q: Will the classes really be free?
A: Yes! We will really be offering free self-defence classes for women!
Q: Who will be teaching the classes?
A: Right now we are in the process of gathering our trainers. (Are you interested in being a trainer? Fill out the preliminary application here!) They will be certified in the R.A.D. defence style. (You can read more about the RAD program here.) To ensure your safety, all board members, volunteers, and defence trainers will be required to pass a criminal record check, and a child abuse registry check. Your safety is our top priority.
Q: Where will classes start?
A: We are starting in Winnipeg, and will expand to other communities in southern Manitoba, then Northern Manitoba, before we move into other provinces. We hope to begin expansion into other provinces within the next 2-3 years, although that might happen sooner, or later, depending on how the roll out in Manitoba goes. Do you want us to consider your province next? Contact us! Expansion plans will likely be shaped by where we have people already ready and willing to help us/get involved.
Q: What parts of Winnipeg will you run classes in?
A: Everywhere! Our goal is to have classes in community centres all over the city. We’ve not yet determined where our first classes will be held, so make sure you’re following us for updates! Not on our mailing list yet? Click here to sign up!
Q: How can I get involved?
A: We’re so glad you asked! If you’re interested in what we’re doing, we have volunteer opportunities available. Additionally, we are actively fundraising; donations are much appreciated! For more information on donating, visit this page. If you aren’t in a position to donate, we’d love it if you would follow us on Facebook & Instagram, and share our posts with your friends.
Q: If I make a donation, will I get a tax receipt?
A: Yes! Effective October 8th, 2023, It Shouldn’t Be Risky is a registered Canadian charity and can issue tax receipts for donations. Our charitable number is 709006944 RR 0001.
